Roberta Rose (Fogleman) Hettel, 70, of San Marcos, CA, passed away on November 19th, 2025 after a courageous journey with cancer. Born on December 4,1954, to Robert William Fogleman and Ruth Vivian Fogleman in San Francisco, CA. Roberta lived a life defined by love, warmth and an unwavering belief in the power of positive thinking.
Roberta had a gift for making everyone feel like family. Her home was always open, filled with fresh flowers and her thoughtful touches that turned every gathering into something special. She was a natural host who found joy in bringing people together in her beautifully decorated spaces. To many of her daughters’ friends and her nieces and nephews, Roberta was a second mom, always ready with open arms, a listening ear and a special way of making everyone feel they belonged.
Above all, Roberta had a remarkable ability to see the best in every situation and every person. She approached life with optimism and grace, always putting others before herself. To know Roberta was to feel truly welcomed, valued and loved.
Roberta was married to James Joseph Hettel for 29 cherished years. She was the devoted mother of Lauren Claire Mathson and Katlin Nicole Moore, daughters with John Joseph Donaghue, and loving stepmother to Jaime Rae Hettel and J.J. Hettel. She was the proud grandmother of Ryan Joseph Mathson, Tyler Robert Mathson, Dillon John Moore and Taylor Rose Moore, as well as Jennie Bird, Tori Hettel, Paige Hettel, Shyanne Bird, Skye Hettel and great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings, Patricia Leidigh and Michael Fogleman. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Roberta was the best mother, wife, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend anyone could ask for and her light will continue to shine through all the lives she touched.
Honoring Roberta’s wishes, she will be cremated with no funeral service. A celebration of life will be held in 2026 to honor her memory and the joy she brought to so many. Details for this celebration will be shared in the coming months. The family welcomes donations to The American Cancer Society or the Foundation for Women’s Cancer in Roberta’s memory.
